BREAKING NEWS: The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) has made two major announcements for JNVST 2027:
✅ Registration deadline EXTENDED from 31 July to 7 August 2026
✅ NEW subject EVS (Environmental Studies) added to the exam — replacing half of the Mental Ability Test
If you’re a parent of a Class 5 student, this blog is the only guide you need. Read every word carefully.
Every year, lakhs of bright students compete for just ~80 seats per Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya across 665+ schools in India. The competition is already tough. But this year, NVS has completely changed the exam pattern by adding a brand-new subject — EVS (Environmental Studies).
What does this mean for your child?
1.The old pattern is gone. MAT is now only 20 questions instead of 40.
2. EVS carries 25 marks — equal to every other section.
3. Students who ignore EVS will lose 25% of their marks before even starting.
At Navodaya Wale, we don’t just share news. We decode it, prepare for it, and help your child win with it. This guide covers the extended deadline, the new exam pattern with EVS, and how to start preparation the right way.

What’s New in JNVST 2027?
{#whats-new}
This year is different from every previous year. NVS has introduced two game-changing updates:
🔴 Update 1: Registration Deadline ExtendedThe original last date was 31 July 2026. Due to high demand and technical issues on the portal, NVS has extended it to 7 August 2026 .This is FINAL. No further extension expected.
🔴 Update 2: NEW EVS Subject Added — Exam Pattern Completely ChangedFor the first time ever, Environmental Studies (EVS) is a separate, dedicated section in JNVST Class 6.
Here’s what changed:
| Section | Old Pattern (Before 2027) | New Pattern (JNVST 2027) |
| Mental Ability Test (MAT) | 40 questions, 50 marks | 20 questions, 25 marks |
| Environmental Studies (EVS) | NOT present | 20 questions, 25 marks |
| Arithmetic Test | 20 questions, 25 marks | 20 questions, 25 marks |
| Language Test | 20 questions, 25 marks | 20 questions, 25 marks |
| Total | 80 questions, 100 marks | 80 questions, 100 marks |
What this means:
MAT is now half of what it used to be (40 → 20 questions)EVS is brand new and carries the same weight as Arithmetic and LanguageStudents who only practiced MAT-heavy books from previous years are underpreparedEVS is NOT just GK — it’s concept-based and tests real understanding of surroundings
🎯 Navodaya Wale Alert: Many coaching centers are still teaching the old pattern. At Navodaya Wale, our entire course has been restructured to match the new EVS-inclusive syllabus from Day 1.
Last Date Extended — Why & What It Means for You {#last-date}
The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti started online applications on 6 July 2026 with an original deadline of 31 July 2026 .
NVS extended the deadline because:
1.Thousands of parents were still gathering Documents
2. Aadhaar verification was taking longer than expected
3. Rural area students needed more time for internet access
4. The new EVS subject announcement created confusion about preparation
The new last date is 7 August 2026.
⚠️ Don’t wait until 6 August night! Server crashes are common in the final 24 hours. Fill the form today and use the extra days to start EVS preparation.

NEW Exam Pattern with EVS — Fully Explained {#new-pattern}
This is the most important section of this blog. The old pattern books and old coaching methods won’t work anymore.
Here’s the official JNVST 2027 pattern:
| Section | Questions | Marks | Duration |
| Mental Ability Test (MAT) | 20 | 25 | 60 Minutes (Combined) |
| Environmental Studies (EVS) | 20 | 25 | (Same 60 min) |
| Arithmetic Test | 20 | 25 | 30 Minutes |
| Language Test | 20 | 25 | 30 Minutes |
| Total | 80 | 100 | 2 Hours |
Key Rules:
✅ No negative marking — attempt ALL 80 questions
✅ MAT + EVS are in the first 60 minutes (combined)
✅ Arithmetic gets 30 minutes
✅ Language gets 30 minutes
✅ Each correct answer = 1.25 marks
✅ Use only blue or black ballpoint pen (no pencil allowed)
✅ Divyang (PwD) students get extra 40 minutes
💡 Why did NVS add EVS? The government wants to test whether students understand their natural surroundings, environment, and daily life science — not just bookish knowledge. This rewards observant, aware students.
EVS Syllabus — Complete Topic Breakdown {#evs-syllabus}
EVS is NOT General Knowledge. It’s Environmental Studies based on your child’s surroundings and daily life. Here’s the complete topic list:🌿
Area 1: Natural World
Modes of transport (land, water, air)
Rivers, mountains, and geography basics
Plants and animals around us
Natural disasters (earthquake, flood, drought)
Types of shelters and homes
Water cycle (evaporation, condensation, rainfall)
🧠 Area 2: Human Body
Nutrients and balanced diet
Personal hygiene
Super senses (smell, taste, touch, sight, hearing)
Basic body systems
🔬 Area 3: Science in Daily Life
Food preservation (pickling, drying, refrigeration)
Types of pollution (air, water, soil, noise)
Water conservation methods
Soil conservation
🏛️ Area 4: Social Surroundings
India — states and capitals
National symbols (flag, anthem, emblem, animal, bird)
Major festivals of India
Seasons and their characteristics
Crops and agriculture
Natural fibres (cotton, jute, silk, wool)
📖 EVS Question Format:
15 direct MCQs on the above topics
1 passage-based comprehension with 5 questions (usually on environment/water conservation themes)
🎯 Navodaya Wale Pro Tip: EVS rewards students who observe their surroundings. Ask your child daily: “What transport did you see today?” “How is rainwater collected?” “Which crop grows in our state?” — these build real understanding, not rote memory.
