Preparing for the Rashtriya Military School Common Entrance Test (RMS CET) starts with understanding exactly what will be asked and how the paper is designed. The exam patterns and syllabus for Class 6 and Class 9 are completely different, so let us break both of them down simply.
RMS CET Class 6: Exam Pattern & Syllabus
The Class 6 entrance exam is an objective, multiple-choice question (MCQ) test. The total time given is 2 hours and 30 minutes. The biggest relief for students is that there is no negative marking, so they should try to attempt every single question.
The Exam Pattern
The paper is divided into four sections:
| Subject | Total Questions | Total Marks | Minimum Qualifying Marks |
| English | 50 | 50 | 35% |
| Intelligence Test | 50 | 50 | 40% |
| Mathematics | 50 | 50 | 40% |
| General Knowledge & Current Affairs | 50 | 50 | 40% |
Important Note for Class 6: The English section is only qualifying. This means the student must score at least 35% in English to pass, but those marks will not be added when creating the final merit list for admission. Merit is decided based on the remaining 150 marks.
What to Study (Syllabus)
The syllabus is generally based on a Class 5 level curriculum.
- Mathematics: This is the most crucial scoring area. Focus on the Number System (HCF, LCM, prime numbers), basic arithmetic (fractions, decimals, percentages), ratio and proportion, profit and loss, simple interest, and basic geometry and mensuration (finding the area and perimeter of simple shapes).
- Intelligence Test: This tests logical thinking rather than textbook knowledge. Practice verbal reasoning (like word analogies), non-verbal reasoning (spotting patterns, finding mirror images), coding-decoding, and basic number or letter series.
- General Knowledge: This section is vast. It covers basic Indian history, geography, science and the environment, sports, important days, and defence awareness. Keep an eye on recent current affairs.
- English: Focus on core grammar (parts of speech, tenses, sentence correction), vocabulary (synonyms and antonyms), and reading comprehension passages.
RMS CET Class 9: Exam Pattern & Syllabus
The Class 9 exam is also a 2.5-hour objective test with no negative marking, but it is much more intense because all subjects count toward the final score.
The Exam Pattern
The exam has 200 questions in total, split across two main papers:
| Paper | Subject | Total Marks |
| Paper 1 | English | 50 |
| Hindi | 20 | |
| Social Science | 30 | |
| Paper 2 | Mathematics | 50 |
| Science | 50 |
Unlike Class 6, there is no “qualifying only” subject here. Every single mark from all five subjects gets added to the final merit score.
What to Study (Syllabus)
The questions for Class 9 are based strictly on the NCERT Class 8 curriculum.
- Mathematics: Your child needs a strong grip on algebraic expressions, linear equations, mensuration (surface area and volume), percentages, profit and loss, data handling, and geometry (properties of triangles and quadrilaterals).
- Science: Study the concepts deeply rather than just memorising definitions. Important topics include force and pressure, light, sound, cell structure, microorganisms, metals and non-metals, chemical effects of electric current, and the solar system.
- Social Science: This covers Class 8 History, Geography, and Civics. Focus on the Indian national movement, the Constitution, resources, industries, and map-based questions.
- English: Similar to Class 6 but at a higher difficulty. Focus on reading comprehension, active and passive voice, tenses, error spotting, synonyms, and antonyms.
- Hindi: Basic Hindi grammar rules, comprehension passages, vocabulary, and sentence correction.
